This painting was originally created for African American History Month (February) and Women's History Month (March). ....
Imagine, if you will, the late 1940�s. World War II is over and the triumphant Tuskegee Airmen have returned home. Thousands of African Americans have migrated from the south to Detroit, Chicago, Philly and NYC. Jackie Robinson is making headlines on the baseball field. The United Nations is a new-born. The south has witnessed its first freedom ride. Dizzy Gillespie is blowing. Duke Ellington and the Big Band are taking the A train. Billy Holiday warns us about Strange Fruit. Lionel Hampton is vibe-ing. Ella Fitzgerald is wowing the world with her scatting � sho be do bop de bop do wop dee do! Katherine Dunham is sliding and leaping and twirling on the dance stage.
And the incomparable Pearl Primus danced her way all the way to Nigeria, In West Africa, where the great chiefs bestowed upon her the name Omowale � child who has returned home.

Sala Adenike

The calling to visual arts began for Visual Artist Audrey "Sala Adenike" Jeter-Allen early in life. She credits many teachers along the way who encouraged her interest. While attending the Fiorello H. LaGuardia School of the Arts (aka the High School of Music and Art) as a music major, she was surrounded by the inspiration, influence and encouragement of visual arts students and teachers. Serious paintings began during those years. The disciplines of music and art have continued to be pivotal to her life throughout adulthood, including earning a Bachelor of Arts degree in Visual and Performing Arts from the State University of New York Empire College. She spent 12 years as the visual arts teacher/art director at the Jessye Norman...
