Description
This painting was originally created for African American History Month (February) and Women's History Month (March). ....
Imagine, if you will, the late 1940s. World War II is over and the triumphant Tuskegee Airmen have returned home. Thousands of African Americans have migrated from the south to Detroit, Chicago, Philly and NYC. Jackie Robinson is making headlines on the baseball field. The United Nations is a new-born. The south has witnessed its first freedom ride. Dizzy Gillespie is blowing. Duke Ellington and the Big Band are taking the A train. Billy Holiday warns us about Strange Fruit. Lionel Hampton is vibe-ing. Ella Fitzgerald is wowing the world with her scatting sho be do bop de bop do wop dee do! Katherine Dunham is sliding and leaping and twirling on the dance stage.
And the incomparable Pearl Primus danced her way all the way to Nigeria, In West Africa, where the great chiefs bestowed upon her the name Omowale child who has returned home.
She came back to the States newly inspired and began to do almost all exclusively African dance. She gave America the gift of the dance Funga, the dance of welcome and prayer of Thanksgiving. This dance has become an African-American treasure and a standard for African Americans who embrace African dance. Pearl Primus/Omowale is personified in the painting FUNGA as she continued to perform Funga later into her career.
