The Sankofa Bird
This African symbol is called the Sankofa Bird. It is part of the Adinkra System of symbols from Ghana West Africa. The Sankofa Bird tells us to honor our history.
In this original image by Artist Sala Adenike, the Sankofa bird turns it head back towards its tail, asking us to honor our past, while at the same time looking AT us to be aware of the present moment. The body of the Sankofa Bird is facing forward to remind us to prepare for the future.
Change is essential as time passes. At the same time, the knowledge of the past must not be forgotten.
